The number of robocalls, instances of fraud from these calls, and fraud losses are rising. The Secure Telephone Identity Revisited (STIR) protocol and the framework for implementing it - Signature-based Handling of Asserted information using toKEN's (SHAKEN) - are good first steps to towards combating unwanted robocalling.

However, due to the multi-platform nature of modern telecommunications networks, multi-platform adoption of STIR SHAKEN with supplementary mechanisms, such as Stopping Exploitation Inter-network Signal Fraud by Mitigating Illegitimate Communications (SEISMIC), is needed.
